Serial Number Prefixes for South Yemen

There were two series of notes issued in South Yemen and each series carried a different format of serial number prefix .

The Notes of the South Arabian Currency Authority

The prefix of the notes issued by the SACA consisted of a Latin letter followed by a western number. All denominations carried the same style of prefix. The serial number prefix started at A1 and incremented in the following manner:

A1, B1, C1, etcetera to Z1 then ...
A2, B2, C2, etcetera to Z2 then ...
A3, B3, C3, etcetera to Z3 and so on ...

The letters 'I' and 'O' were not used in the sequence as they resembe the numerals 1 and 0.

The Notes of the Bank of Yemen

The notes issued by the Bank of Yemen carried serial number prefixes in the format of 'Series and denomination letters'. The fractional prefix contained two Arabic letters over a number built with western numerals. The left-hand Arabic letter was the 'Series' letter and the right-hand letter was the 'Denominational' letter. As there was only one series produced, all notes carry the letter ا (alif). The letters assigned to each denomination are in the chart below (used in the numeric sequence of the alphabet). The number below the Arabic letters started at 1 and incremented as the series continued. The prefixes of the 500-fils notes would increment in the following manner: با/‎1, با/‎2, با/‎3, با/‎4, et cetera. For replacement notes, the number was replaced by the Arabic letter س (so a replacement note for the 500 fils would have the prefix of: س/با).

Denomination Letter
500 Fils ب
1 Dinar ج
