Gulf Rupees Reference Page | Serial Number Prefixes
The Gulf Rupees were introduced to replace the Indian Rupees that were circulating in the Arabian Gulf states. The notes adopted the the same style of serial number prefix as that used for the Indian notes. In order to make the serial numbers distinct from those used in India, the fractional prefixes use 'Z' as the letter over the number.
The prefixes started at Z/0, with the number below the 'Z' being incremented in each cycle, i.e. Z/0, Z/1, Z/2, Z/3, etcetera. The highest recorded prefix is Z/14 for the 10-rupee notes.
