Serial Number Prefixes for Egypt

For the notes described on the chart on the Egyptian Reference Page, there are three groups of notes. The prefixes used for each group are shown below.

How to read the date on Egyptian Banknotes

Starting with No.49 onwards, Egyptian notes have a 6 digit date-code rather than the conventional method of dating notes used prior to 1979.
The 6 digits are in form of YDDMMY, where the first and last digits make up the year, the 2nd and 3rd digits are the day, and 4th and 5th digits together represent the month. Example ٩٢٤٠٦١ will be 91-24-06, June 24, 1991.

In the charts below are illustrated the letters used for the serial number prefixes of the Egyptian bank notes. It can be seen that the letters used for the prefixes are assigned, more or less, in alphabetical order. The sequence starts in the first group, where the first five letters are used, and continues into the second group. The second group uses six of the next seven letters, and it is possible that the eleventh letter was reserved for a denomination that was never released. While the alphabetical sequence becomes a little lost in the third group, some semblance of the sequence can be seen.
