Variety — These notes were illegally ordered from the Argentinian security printers Ciccone Calcografica by a group of confidence tricksters posing as representatives of the Bahrain Monetary Agency (BMA). BD1.5 million were presented to branches of the BMA in the UAE and Qatar between 4 and 11 June 1998. At this time they were discovered to be different to the notes in circulation. The genuine notes were consequently withdrawn from circulation on 30 July 1998.
The unauthorized notes can be simply distinguished from the original notes by comparing the shading in the panel behind the name of the issuing authority (on the front of the note) and by comparing the spacing between the first two characters in the red serial number.
