Illustration — Jalali Fort. This is one of two forts found in Muscat. It is found protecting the western side of Muscat harbour. Jalali Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1587 under the direction of Melchior Calaca and was originally called San Joao. During the reign of Said bin Taimur the fort was used as the jail in Muscat.
