Iraq Reference Page | Serial Number Prefixes
Iraq has used two different styles of serial number prefixes.
For the first two sets, the prefix system is the method used by most Arab countries, utilizing the numeric sequence of the alphabet. The first denomination is ب, the second denomination is ج, the third denomination is د and so on. (It is not clear why they did not start with ا, but it might have been due to its similarity with the numeral one.) The number following each prefix letter starts with 1 (Nos.51-55) and continues with subsequent signatures, and also continues with the second issue (Nos.56-60).
| Denomination | Prefix |
| 10 Dinars | و |
| 5 Dinars | هـ |
| 1 Dinar | د |
| ½ Dinar | ج |
| ¼ Dinar | ب |
Unlike other Arab countries, Iraq has adopted a unique prefix system. The prefix for each denomination in the latest series is simply the first letter for that specific denomination. Q for Quarter, H for Half, O for One, F for Five, T for Ten, and TF for Twenty Five Dinars. The number following each prefix letter starts with 1 for the first printing, and continues with each subsequent new signature, thus for the Ten Dinar (No.71) the prefix is T/34 -T/124 (١٢٤/ع – ٣٤/ع), continued with No.71b, T/235 - T/277 (٢٧٧/ع – ٢٣٥/ع), and followed by No.71c, T/329 - T/388 (٣٨٨/ع – ٣٢٩/ع). On Nos. 75 and 76 the د stands for 'Dinar'.
For the 'Emergency Issue, 1992-96' (No.77 - 85) and for No. 74, the same format is adopted, but most denominations have ا added to the left of the letter. For the new denominations, the 100-dinar adopts the same format but the 50- and 250-dinar notes adopt a different standard. The letters used for the 250-dinar are TFD, representing Two-hundred and Fifty Dinars. The letters used for the 50-dinar note are the first and last letters of the Arabic word for Fifty; i.e. FY. The Arabic word for five is 'Khamsa' and the word for fifty is 'Khamsoon'. Since the prefix for the 5-dinar notes had already used خ (the letter KH) and ا, they could not be used for the 50-dinar note. Thus the variation of خنis used.
