On 22nd March 2008 the Cabinet of the UAE Government endorsed a new coat of arms, which had been approved by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The new arms were to be in use from 1st May and adopted by all authorities in the UAE by 31st December 2008. In accordance with this deadline, the arms appear on the 100-dhiram note dated 2008/1429; although this note was released in 2009.
Most of the arms have been subtly redrawn, wth the feathers on the wings being noticeably different. The shield in the centre of the arms is now different. Instead of the Arabic dhow, which was in the centre of the old arms, the new coat of arms displays the UAE flag surrounded by seven stars, representing the seven emirates. The name of the United Arab Emirates at the bottom is in a different font.
