Illustration — Mirani Fort. This is the second fort in Muscat and was built in 1588 by the Portuguese in an effort to strengthen their position in that city. Built on the eastern side of Muscat harbour, it was originally called ‘Fort Capitan’ and was constructed under the direction of Dom Manuel do Souza Coutinho. During the reign of Said bin Taimur, Mirani fort was used as the headquarters of the Muscat garrison.
