Welcome to the Reference Site for Islamic Banknotes. The aim of this site is to promote interest, research and communication about the banknotes issued in Islamic countries. The charts linked to this page are the result of collaboration between a number of collectors. It is hoped that visitors to this site will provide information in an ongoing manner, that will expand the available knowledge on Islamic banknotes. If you have any comments or any information that you think may be useful, please contact us. We definitely want to know if there are any new issues or new varieties of banknotes.
This site was initially developed by Armen Hovsepian and Peter Symes, but we are interested in expanding the content and detail of the pages. If you have information on the banknotes issued by an Islamic country, that is not listed in these pages, please send us the information and we will write a page for it. If you have information that will update any of the pages, we are also interested in receiving it. Our aim is to have complete and up-to-date listings of banknotes for as many Islamic countries as possible. As long as there is support from the collecting public, we expect that we will go a long way towards achieving this.
The information in the pages attached to this site is arranged in charts. The colours used in these charts mean the following:
Column headings are in Blue.
Series headings are in burgundy.
Entries that are known in the SCWPM are in black.
New issues and entries that are not in the SCWPM have an aqua background.
Do you know about any new issues? Do you know of new varieties? We want this site to be able to advise collectors of new issues and new discoveries. So, if you have some news, please e-mail us and we will list the news on our News Page. We will acknowledge all contributions (unless you want to remain anonymous).
In the charts on this site, all banknotes are listed against their reference in the 'Standard Catalog of World Paper Money', published by Krause Publications . This volume is refered to by its acronym 'SCWPM' in these web pages, although it is known by many collectors as 'Pick', after its original author Albert Pick.
The entries for 'Yemen' and 'South Yemen' also carry catalogue references from The Bank Notes of Yemen by Peter Symes, Murray Hanewich and Keith Street.
Do you understand how the serial number prefixes work for Islamic bank notes? There are a number of different constructs used by the different issuing authorities. Check out our detailed analysis of the different serial number prefixes used by the differing authorities on our Prefixes Page.
